Board Highlights October 15, 2024

Tompkins Avenue Bridge

Residents have raised concerns about why Tompkins Avenue Bridge is closed.  Stuart Tiekert asserted that he had submitted a request under the Freedom of Information Act that yielded no substantive reason why the bridge had been closed since 2021.

Mayor Sharon Torres, after reporting about the issue on social media, asked Interim Village Manager Chuck Strome to update the residents at the October 15, 2024 Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting.  Strome reported that after receiving approximately 250 emails on this issue, he asked HVEA, the engineering firm who evaluated the bridge back in 2021 (See HERE.) to update the condition.  They found that the bridge had further deteriorated and recommended not reopen as it requires a full replacement. See HERE.

Columbus Park Plantings

Another cause for numerous complaints was the recent cutting back of the plantings along the rivers in Columbus Park.  Strome reported that they had received complaints about the overgrowth and illegal activity associated with it.  Strome said that the roots of the plants had not been destroyed and the vegetation would regrow next Spring.

Nostrand-Howard Pocket Park

The Committee for the Environment (CFTE), along with other volunteers, have been working on cleaning up Village land along the Mamaroneck River at the corner of Nostrand and Howard Avenues.  The BOT unanimously agreed to designate the area as a Village park at an upcoming meeting. See plan HERE.
