If you've ever been a guest at a book lover's house, delighting in the joy of browsing their shelves for a title that might catch your eye, then a visit to “More Than Words” is a must. This charming gem nestled in our village offers a warm atmosphere, inviting you to explore a curated collection of pre-owned books.
A Serendipitous Journey to Opening
This new literary haven is co-owned by a mother-and-son team, Maritza and Fernando Salomon. Initially launched as an online venture during the COVID-19 pandemic, the dream of a physical bookstore came to fruition when the perfect retail space became available just next door to Maritza’s previous job on East Boston Post Road.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the excitement of opening a new store, the Salomons faced significant hurdles, including Village regulations that complicated the installation of new signage for their storefront. “It would cost around $5,000 and take six to eight months to get approval for signage,” Maritza explained, emphasizing the financial pressures that small businesses often encounter. Marketing efforts have relied heavily on word-of-mouth and social media, with the local community discovering the store through platforms like Instagram and Reddit.
Building Community Connections
“More Than Words” is quickly establishing itself as a key player in the community by encouraging customers to bring in books for donation, offering discounts on purchases proportional to the number of books donated. This initiative promotes sustainability and fosters a sense of community engagement. The Salomons have participated in events like Mamaroneck’s Summer on the Avenue Block Party, receiving positive feedback from locals who appreciate having a bookstore in town.
The Enduring Appeal of Physical Books
In an age dominated by digital media and online commerce, “More Than Words” strives to create a personal experience for book lovers. The store features a small but cozy entry area filled with hundreds of gently used books across various genres, including children’s and young adults’ literature, cookbooks, graphic novels for all ages, educational texts, poetry, history, foreign languages, large type, and more. Additionally, a collection of film DVDs and vinyl records enhances the browsing experience while lending a nostalgic feel.
The bookstore includes three small, curated browsing rooms in the back, each dedicated to different themes such as health and wellness, children's books, business, and fiction. Maps and local memorabilia adorn the walls, adding a local touch to the atmosphere. Maritza, having previously worked at a party and balloon shop, enjoys creating festive gift arrangements for new mothers and children's birthday gifts. “We create themed baskets and offer gift cards, which can be an ideal option for kids. They can come browse for themselves and take home books of their choice.”
The Salomons emphasize the joy of discovery that comes with used bookstores, with Fernando adding, “People say that the fun part is scanning the shelves to see what titles jump out at you!” The unique, constantly changing inventory means that a book seen one day might be gone the next, creating a sense of urgency for buyers. “If you see a book and you think you like it, really think about getting it because the next time you come in... it might not be here,” he cautioned.
Looking Ahead
After six months of operation, “More Than Words” is beginning to break even financially, marking a promising start for the bookstore. With aspirations for future community events and potential expansion, Maritza and Fernando are committed to solidifying their role as a cherished resource for our community. As Maritza reflected on their journey, it’s clear that their focus on customer connection and community support will continue to guide their efforts.
