Public Service Announcement: Avoid Check Washing Fraud

Several Village taxpayers who thought they paid their Village taxes that were due in early January, were shocked to receive delinquency notices from the Village.

They had mailed their checks, and the checks were cashed BUT, the Village never received payment.

Turns out, the checks had been stolen and “washed”.  (Check washing is when thieves steal checks and then alter the payee and/or amount.)  Unfortunately, New York State law mandates a penalty for late and/or non-payment of taxes and theft is not excluded so taxpayers have the burden to pay the penalties which can mount up.

Village officials urge taxpayers to pay all taxes in person at Village Hall whenever possible.  Electronic payments can also be made for a small processing fee.
