Richard DuBois, a warm-hearted Navy veteran, lifelong sportsman, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at St. Camillus Nursing Home at the age of 84.
Born on October 20, 1941, Richard lived life with humor, grit, and a generous spirit—always ready with a story, a laugh, or the shirt off his back. A proud U.S. Navy Fireman from 1958 to 1962, he served aboard the USS Sunbird, a Chanticleer-class submarine rescue ship. After his military service, he spent more than 35 years as an Operating Engineer in New York City, a proud member of Local 15.
He was deeply committed to his community, volunteering as a firefighter with both Hook & Ladder in Mamaroneck and the Margaretville Fire Department, as well as an ambulance driver in Mamaroneck. A member of American Legion Post 15, Richard lived a life of service and camaraderie.
An avid outdoorsman, Richard found joy and adventure in hunting across New York, Wyoming, and even Ancosti Island, Canada. He was a passionate fisherman, freshwater and saltwater alike, spending summers on the Salmon River and Lake Ontario, and winters casting lines in the Gulf of Mexico. In his younger years, duck hunting filled his weekends, and later in life, so did smoking fish and perfecting his BBQ (by his rules: “If it’s burnt, it’s cooked”).
He loved travel, and together with his beloved wife Donna, his partner of 58 years, he enjoyed many cruises, including their dream 30-day journey through the South Pacific, visiting Fiji, Hawaii, Bora Bora, and Tahiti.
Richard was predeceased by Donna and is survived by his loving children: Richard of Mamaroneck; Nicole (nee Livesey) and her husband Lon of Sylva, North Carolina; and Christine (nee Bauldry and her husband Joseph of Arlington, Virginia. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Gerry Buccino of Mamaroneck, and many, many dear friends.
Whether gathered around a campfire or sitting at the kitchen table, Richard had a story to tell, a joke to share, and a way of making everyone feel at home. His favorite saying, “It is what it is,” spoke to the way he lived—grounded, accepting, and content in the life he built. He lived fully, loved deeply, and laughed often—and his legacy lives on in those lucky enough to have known him.
