We’ve all driven by the unassuming structure at the entrance to Harbor Island—a humble reminder that Mamaroneck is a seaside village where fishing culture thrives, even for those who don’t own a boat. As striped bass, porgies, and snappers begin to run, The Shack HI (Harbor Island) and its companion, The Shack Food Truck, owned and operated by Adam Mann, have become destinations for locals and visitors alike.
“Fishing blends skill, strategy, and competition, yet it also welcomes anyone to cast from a local dock and try their luck,” says Mann. “We’re here to support all—from kids eager to drop a line to those participating in our tournaments.”
A Passionate Beginning
Mann and his wife, Eileen, lived in Mamaroneck for 24 years, raising their three children in the local school system. "We love it here," Mann shares, reflecting his long commitment to the community. His extensive involvement ranged from serving as commissioner of the Girls Lacrosse League to volunteering with CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).
In 2020, after a long career in insurance and finance, Mann made the bold move to pursue his passion for fishing. He transformed a rundown bait shop into The Shack HI—a welcoming space for families and fishing enthusiasts.
Revitalizing a Historical Spot
This transformation has not only brightened the shop but also revived a location that evokes memories of slow summers spent by the water. Previously, the site housed an on-and-off-again bait shop that had closed for two years. Now, with its inviting atmosphere, children come to The Shack HI after school, and dog owners stop by for treats for their furry friends.
A Full-Service Fishing Experience
At The Shack HI, customers can find everything they need for a successful fishing trip. The shop offers a wide variety of baits, including sandworms, bloodworms, bunker, crabs, clams, and squid, catering to local anglers who frequent the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. Mann estimates that about 75% of his customers fish from shore, while 25% fish from boats. As a reliable source of information, The Shack HI provides advice on what fish are running, the best spots from shore and on the water, tide charts, and the right bait for the day.
Mann, who has enjoyed fishing since childhood, says, "These days, I'm not fishing as much as helping others get out there." This commitment has turned the shop into a hub for young anglers, with 40-50 kids signing up for the popular summer snapper tournament each year. Additionally, there’s a Blackfish tournament in the fall, further engaging the community in fishing traditions.
One parent shared their experience: “My 7-year-old son is a fishing fanatic. I’m not. The staff at The Shack spent so much time helping me set my son up for success.”
In addition to bait, the shop sells a range of fishing gear, including rod and reel repairs. Mann emphasizes, “We have a good reputation because we understand that fishing is an adventure people commit to. We support in any way we can—whether it’s leaving bait out the night before for early risers or offering private and group classes to help enthusiasts at any level.”
Comfort Food at The Shack Food Truck
While fishing is a major draw, no visit to The Shack HI is complete without stopping by The Shack Food Truck. Serving easy comfort food—burgers, hot dogs, Adam’s Chile, and chicken with specialty hot sauce—it offers a convenient option for families enjoying a day outdoors. The Shack Food Truck also delivers throughout Harbor Island, providing a menu at the beach and taking orders from patrons who prefer to stay put. An e-bike with a wagon ensures that beachgoers and those on the sports fields can enjoy their meals without interruption.
Engaging the Community
Community involvement is at the heart of Mann’s mission, seamlessly tying together his personal values and business goals. He collaborates with local schools and organizations, such as the Marine Education Center and the Village Summer Camp at Harbor Island, donating fishing gear and sponsoring youth fishing clubs.
A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on his journey, Mann expresses a deep commitment to the community. "I’ve spent six years perfecting this business, and I hope to be here for a long time," he says. With a reputation for quality service and a genuine passion for fishing, The Shack HI and The Shack Food Truck are set to remain integral parts of the Harbor Island experience.
The Shack HI and The Shack Food Truck open their doors in April. During the busy season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, both operate seven days a week from 6 AM to 7 PM.
