Boston Post Road Project Causes Concern

The proposed Route 1 (Boston Post Road) improvements are energizing residents both for and against the project.  A letter dated September 21 (see HERE) from State Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblyman Steve Otis clarifies where we are in the process and asks for community comments and reactions.  The NYS Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) drafted the initial plan.

The narrative (see HERE) first released shows traffic data along the corridor identified for improvement.  The revised proposal can be found HERE.

Where We Are in the Process

The letter says the “scope of the project is not pre-scripted by NYS DOT,” and that the design is not complete and no plan has been finalized.  According to the letter, “now is the time for additional public, municipal, and school district comments.”  Each municipality will collect and evaluate them (including work with traffic consultants) and then make recommendations and comments to NYS DOT about specific aspects of the draft plan.

Residents have tagged pedestrian safety, improved traffic flow, and parking as important goals.  Mayer and Otis stress there is “no one-size-fits-all” for achieving these goals and different locations along the Boston Post Road may end up with different design solutions.

Local Businesses Worry About Impact

With parking at a premium along Boston Post Road, area businesses are concerned about impacts on their customers.  Now is the time to speak up if you have concerns about this or any other aspect of the plan.

What You Can Do Now

All three municipalities (Town and Village of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont) are gathering community comments to share with the NYS DOT.
