Mamaroneck + Pizza = Sal’s

Mamaroneck Observer

In Memory of Salvatore DeRose

by Marina Kiriakou -

Salvatore DeRose, affectionately known as “Uncle Sal” or “The Boss,” passed away on March 2nd, leaving a legacy that has profoundly touched our community.   As the founder of Sal’s Pizzeria, which has been a cherished institution in Mamaroneck since 1964, Sal was more than just a beloved business owner; he was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a cornerstone of the community.

A Heart for the Community

Born in Carolei, Italy, in 1936, Sal brought his passion for food and family to America, dedicating 35 years to his pizzeria, which has served the community for over 60 years.  His warm smile and generous spirit made everyone feel welcome, creating an atmosphere that was as much about community as it was about food.  Sal’s commitment to simplicity and excellence was evident in his approach to the menu, which he kept straightforward, believing in "doing what you do best."  His signature dishes, like Sicilian pizza and salad pizza, delighted countless customers.  “It’s always about treating customers right, using quality ingredients, and consistency,” his son Stephen reflects.  “It’s a simple formula - we never deviate, and it works.”

A Legacy of Generosity

Sal's influence extended well beyond the kitchen.  Known for his generosity, he often helped those in need, allowing customers short on cash to pay later or not at all.  “My father was all about helping other people,” Stephen shares, recalling how Sal wanted everyone to achieve their dreams just as he had for his family.  “He hardly ever turned down the opportunity to lend someone money.  He felt fortunate to come to this country and wanted to help give others a chance for a better life.”

Mentorship and Family

This spirit of giving back fostered deep connections between Sal's Pizzeria and the community it served.  From sponsoring local sports teams to contributing to school fundraisers, Sal understood the importance of supporting his neighbors.  His daughter-in-law, Maria DeRose, highlighted how Sal inspired her journey into local government, where she was recently elected Village Trustee.  “Sal always encouraged me to get involved, and I wanted to make him proud,” Maria said, emphasizing how his legacy continues to influence her work for the community.

Cherished Memories

Sal’s relationships with his staff were equally impressive; he treated them like family.  Many employees stayed with him for decades, often returning to share their success stories.  “One employee just celebrated his 50th anniversary of working at Sal’s,” Stephen proudly notes.  Sal would often take his team out after closing, creating a sense of camaraderie that went beyond just work.  “We were a family,” Stephen recalls, sharing how nights spent playing foosball or pool and enjoying each other's company built lasting bonds.

Sal’s humility was another defining trait.  He was often surprised by the popularity of his pizzeria and the love it received from the community.  "He was humbled by it," Maria shared, reflecting on his modesty despite the far-reaching impact he had.  Every summer, Sal traveled back to his hometown in Italy, where he maintained deep connections with family and friends, reminding him of his roots and the journey that brought him to America.

Family Matters

Sal’s commitment to family was the cornerstone of his life.  He cherished spending time with his loved ones, from hunting trips with his late son Salvatore to attending soccer games whenever he could fit them between busy hours at the pizzeria.  “Dad was always working to build this foundation for us, but he would take the time to see our soccer games, as long as they fell between lunch and dinner time,” Stephen remembers.

A Lasting Impact

As the community mourns the loss of Sal, it also celebrates the legacy he leaves behind.  The outpouring of affection and remembrance on social media speaks volumes about Sal's impact on the lives of those around him.  A glimpse at the pizzeria’s Facebook page shows nearly 800 comments honoring a true local legend.  Many shared memories of watching Sal toss pizzas into the air behind the counter, a performance that delighted both children and adults.

Sal’s Pizzeria is not just a restaurant but a beloved institution that has become synonymous with Mamaroneck.  Many in the village have had guests from out of town say, “I just want to make sure I stop by to get a slice at Sal’s while I’m here,” a testament to how deeply Sal’s legacy is woven into the fabric of our community.

A True Local Legend

Despite being forced to retire 25 years ago due to a cancer diagnosis, Sal’s vision lives on as his sons, Stephen and Michael, along with two grandsons, continue the family tradition.  The recipes remain unchanged, ensuring that each slice serves as a reminder of Sal’s dedication to his craft. “His legacy will live forever,” Stephen assures, “certainly his pizza will—his family will ensure that.”

In the wake of his passing, the community mourns the loss of an extraordinary man whose life was defined by hard work and the heartfelt connections he made with everyone around him. It is because of this that Mamaroneck + Pizza has come to equal “Sal’s.”
