Most Holy Trinity Church Open This Weekend

The iconic Most Holy Trinity Church will be open for Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity on Saturday, May 30^th at 6 pm.  This is an opportunity for members of the community to see this locally landmarked church that is open only twice a year.

History of the Church

The church began in 1867 as a mission of Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle.  Prior to the current church building, the pastor from New Rochelle would come once a month to say mass in private homes.  For services such as marriages and baptisms, people had to travel from Mamaroneck to New Rochelle.

The church building, built in the Gothic Revival style, was completed and dedicated in 1886.  This year marks its 140^th anniversary.  Over the years, a school, convent, rectory and gymnasium were built on the site and these buildings remain today.

Merger with St. Vito’s

In 2014, the Archdiocese of New York announced a round of church closures and Most Holy Trinity was on the list, but its parishioners fought back and won.  Their victory prevented the sale of the property and/or the church being demolished.  Parishioners describe this struggle as a “David vs. Goliath” fight as they “won” by appealing directly to the Vatican.  Additionally, the church is opened only twice a year – once to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity and in August to celebrate the church’s anniversary. 

The parishioners continue their quest to have weekly masses at the church and many hope to see other services such as funerals held there as well.

The merged parish is currently known as the Most Holy Trinity – St. Vito parish although colloquially most shorten it to St. Vito’s.

Historic Stained Glass Windows

The church is known for its numerous stained glass windows depicting notable saints and scenes from the life of Jesus.

The Mass on Saturday at 6 pm will be followed by a free dinner for the community.  Most Holy Trinity Church is located at 320 E Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck.
