Ellen R. Barbieri - On March 20, 2023 passed away peacefully with her children surrounding her. She was 98 years old. Ellen was the loving wife of Joseph J. Barbieri for 47 years, who had pre-deceased her. They made a life together in Mamaroneck. Ellen leaves behind five children, June Hesler (Charlie, deceased), Mary (Tom) Connor, Joanne Barbieri, John Barbieri and Catherine (Charlie) Jelinek.
Ellen was born in County Mayo, Ireland on August 1, 1924, the daughter of Mary and John Rattigan. She was one of 9 children. Her zest for life was evident by her emigration to America in the spring of 1949 from England, where she lived for 6+ years. Ellen’s strong determination to succeed was proven by a rapid rise as a bank teller before becoming a mother. She became a US citizen in the 1960’s.
Ellen was an exceptional person in many ways. As a member of the Mamaroneck Woman’s Club for many decades, she devoted her time on club activities to help those less fortunate. Ellen’s love of life, charismatic personality, and passion for gardening was a constant throughout her lifetime. On Sundays, she enjoyed listening to Fordham University’s WFUV Irish Music broadcast. She delighted in keeping her family close, spending time with them and loved to prepare delicious meals for her family.
Ellen was known for her good sense of humor, quick wit and was never at a loss of words to express her opinions on any subject she encountered.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Sarah Hesler (Matt Novenstern), John, Elizabeth and Tom Connor, Olivia (Alexander) Fornaciari, Ellie Barbieri, Caitlin (Adam) Quinn, Anna (Andrew) Bellucci, and Charlie Jelinek. Ellen had three great grandchildren, Hava, Andrew and Stanley.
