Did you know there's a vibrant group of aged 60 and over men and women in our community who participate in activities offered by At Home on the Sound (AHOTS)?
For example, twice a month, for 90 minutes, eight to ten members of the Senior Men's group meet in the Historical Society Room at the Mamaroneck Library. Our current chair brings thought- provoking clippings from a variety of newspapers and magazines.
Whether the topics of conversation involve current events or simply general interests, everyone has an opportunity to express their opinion. What I enjoy most is that everyone has something worthwhile to contribute and shares their own unique life experience. We also laugh a lot!
On occasion, a guest such as George Latimer, the Westchester County Executive, will visit one of our meetings to discuss local issues and answer questions.
Recently, AHOTS hosted an event at the Mamaroneck Cinemas where all the animated short films that were nominated for this year's Oscars were viewed. Following the movies, attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch at Nonna Carolla.
Among other activities is a monthly luncheon at Sedona Restaurant, Happy Hour, and coffee 'klatches' at the main office where members and volunteers gather to "shoot the breeze."
At Home on the Sound is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2010. Its purpose (aside from socializing opportunities) is to provide essential services, such as transportation to medical appointments and shopping, to men and women aged 60 and over living in Larchmont and Mamaroneck.
The Annual Gala dinner is always well attended, and this year will be held on May 18 at the Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club. Each year AHOTS recognizes someone for the time and effort they give to the AHOTS community and the Larchmont-Mamaroneck community at large. This year's honoree will be Elaine Chapnick.
Volunteers are the heart of the organization at AHOTS. They are always in need of volunteer drivers. Do you have an hour a month? Would you like to make a difference in your community? If you are interested in volunteering or joining At Home on the Sound, you can visit their website www.athomeonthesound.org or call (914) 899-3150.
