Board Highlights August 28, 2023

In a very short meeting on August 28th, the Board of Trustees paid some bills totaling $2,575,095.50. The only other item on the agenda was a Resolution to keep Harbor Island Beach open on weekends after Labor Day.

Jason Pinto, Superintendent of Recreation, proposed that the beach and sprayground be open on weekends in September to partially make up for “an awful summer.” The beach was closed by the County Department of Health 21% of the summer and that doesn’t include rainy, cloudy, wildfire smoke-filled days when the beach-going public stayed away.

The cost would be covered by savings in his departmental budget since the part-time staff do not get paid when they don’t work. After discussion, the Board voted to open the beach for the two weekends after Labor Day to gauge public interest. Both the beach and the sprayground will be open September 8, 9, 10, 15 and 16, weather permitting. If the beach is open but swimming is not permitted, the sprayground will be closed as well.
