This problem falls under the heading of “it should be easy but it’s not.”  At the April 27, 2026 Board of Trustees (BOT) Work Session, Dennis Delborgo, Assistant Village Manager, explained what is needed to remedy the situation at the intersection of Mamaroneck and Prospect Avenues.  This intersection has been the site of several pedestrian/car accidents.

Delborgo’s memo to the BOT (see HERE) explains the issue in great detail.  To summarize, the current situation gives pedestrians wanting to cross Prospect Avenue a walk signal as cars traveling east on Mamaroneck Avenue get a green light.  The problem occurs when the driver does not see the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

The remedy is to have to all cars stopped when pedestrians cross but it’s not that simple.  The current equipment cannot accommodate an all-pedestrian walk phase.  Furthermore, the traffic signals at Mamaroneck Avenue and Boston Post Road cannot communicate with the signals at this intersection.  New equipment is needed to fix the problem without causing major traffic backups and delays.  The full project is estimated to cost $600,000 and has been added to the list of potential capital projects.

In the interim, instead of an all-pedestrian phase, a shorter interval called a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) can be created that would give a pedestrian a 4-7 second head start to increase their visibility to drivers.  This requires equipment and signage and would cost less than $10,000.

The BOT voted unanimously to move the interim project forward at the May 11, 2026, Legislative Meeting.
