Be a tourist in your own neighborhood this Saturday, May 16th and investigate The Mamaroneck United Methodist Church (MUMC) from 12 – 4 pm at 546 E Boston Post Road.  Church members will be available to share the church’s history and deep roots in the community.

Built in 1859 by Local Shipbuilders

MUMC is a Carpenter Gothic Revival structure built in 1859 by local shipbuilders.  The octagonal spire, with lancet windows, arched cornices and capped by a Fleur de Lis finial was once visible from anywhere in Mamaroneck and was a beacon not only for the community, but for those entering Mamaroneck Harbor by boat.

According to the National Register of Historic Places:

"With its substantial integrity of design, materials and workmanship, the Mamaroneck Methodist Church is an excellent example of wood frame Gothic Revival style ecclesiastical architecture and is a rare example of this style of architecture in Westchester County.”

Over the long life of this church many repairs have been painstakingly undertaken to maintain its distinctive “look”.

Close Calls and Earlier Restorations

A significant restoration effort was begun in the early 1990s after the church bell fell from the steeple into the vestibule on a Sunday morning, narrowly missing parishioners.  This event triggered a 4-year restoration effort from 1992-1996.  The goal was to restore and renew this historic structure back to its original “imagining”.  The 1992-1996 restoration included a fundraiser where donors wrote their names on the back of the new roof slates, those slates which now keep the roof secure.  More recently, in 2024-2025, many may remember the scaffolding surrounding the steeple.  For at least the second time in about 10 years, a hurricane damaged the steeple and several of the ornamental elements on the steeple, all which needed to be repaired.

All are welcome and the church is accessible.  Refreshments will be available.
