Honoring our Veterans

Do you have a relative or friend who served their country whom you would like to publicly recognize for their service?  Would you like to recognize a veteran from Mamaroneck who deserves the honor but has no family to sponsor them?

Beginning Memorial Day 2026, the Village of Mamaroneck will be festooned with red, white and blue banners celebrating our veterans.

Last summer, local resident Amy Siskind was impressed with banners honoring veterans hanging in other Westchester communities.  She thought “why not Mamaroneck?” and contacted officials in Irvington, which had a particularly nice display.  Siskind was put in touch with the volunteer who organized it and from there, she was on a mission to bring the banner project to our Village.

Village Gets Involved

First working with Jan Northrup from the Kemper Memorial Foundation, Siskind put together a project outline and presented it to the Board of Trustees (BOT) for approval.  Too late to implement in 2025, the BOT dismissed Siskind.  Undaunted, Siskind came back in December 2025, and the Village approved the project and joined the team by agreeing to purchase the brackets and hangers needed to display the banners, hang the banners and remove them in early December.

Team Expands

Siskind quickly got to work and found lots of other help as one person connected to another and so on.  Soon the team included local Girl Scouts, the Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club, the Mamaroneck Elks Lodge, the local chapter of the American Legion all helping to honor local veterans.

How to Order a Banner

Banners can be purchased for deceased veterans who lived in the Village or by a current Village resident for a family member.  The process is relatively simple and must be completed online.  Start by clicking HERE.

Banners come in two sizes.  The smaller ones are $100 and will be displayed along Mamaroneck Avenue in the central business district.  The larger ones to be displayed on Boston Post Road and Halstead Avenue are $160.  Because the Village is paying for the hangers, this price is significantly less than in other local communities.

The Lions Club is collecting payments electronically via Zelle or by check.  The Lions have a post office box at the Mamaroneck Post Office so a stamped envelope can be dropped off there.

Don’t Have Someone to Honor?

Anyone can contribute a banner to honor a Mamaroneck veteran who does not have a sponsor.  If you are interested, email VOMbanner@gmail.com.

When Can I Order a Banner?

Orders are now open.  The deadline is May 1st which may seem like a way away but will come quickly.  If you miss the deadline, you will have to wait until 2027 when the banners will be rehung.  (The Elks Lodge will store them over the winter.)

In a recent interview, Amy Siskind was enthusiastic about her praise for the Village.  “A big thank you to the Village for paying for the brackets and hangers.  This made the banners much less expensive for everyone.”  Siskind singled out Jeff Ahne, Kathleen Gill, the BOT and DPW staff.
