In the heart of our village, where the culinary landscape is already rich with diverse offerings along the Avenue, a new establishment is making its mark: Kutir.  Meaning “hut” or “cottage” in Sanskrit, this restaurant invites diners into a space that embodies warmth and authenticity, emphasizing the comforting essence of Indian cuisine.

Kutir is led by the acclaimed Chef Hemant Mathur, a trailblazer in the Indian culinary scene in the United States.  As the first Indian chef to earn Michelin stars at two New York City restaurants—Devi and Tulsi—Mathur brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to redefining perceptions of Indian food.  In his latest venture, he presents a menu that honors the rich tapestry of Indian flavors from various regions, rather than focusing on a single culinary tradition.

A Culinary Journey

Mathur’s culinary journey began in Jaipur, India, in 1983, taking him across the globe and into the kitchens of some of New York’s most celebrated restaurants.  His mission at Kutir is clear:  to introduce a contemporary, health-conscious interpretation of Indian cuisine to the suburban audience of Mamaroneck—a community rich in cultural diversity and a growing enthusiasm for global flavors.

“I want to showcase the evolution of Indian food,” Mathur explains.  “It’s not just about spice; it’s about the balance of flavors and the use of fresh ingredients.”  This philosophy is evident in Kutir’s thoughtfully curated menu, which features an array of dishes that highlight India’s regional diversity.

A Menu of Distinction

The offerings at Kutir are a celebration of Indian culinary heritage, with dishes that range from fragrant biryanis and coastal seafood curries to expertly grilled meats and vibrant vegetarian options.  Each plate is carefully crafted using fresh ingredients and select spices.

The Chef’s signature dish is Hemant’s Signature Lamb Chops, and the menu also includes such unexpected entrees as Pesto Chicken and Grilled Bronzini.  Other notable dishes include Mixed Sprout Salad, Grilled Oyster Mushrooms, Lamb Shashlik (tender cuts marinated and cooked in the tandoori oven), and Chemmeen Olathiyathu (shrimp stir-fry introducing a unique regional flavor).  Specialty desserts such as the Thandai Gulab Jamun and Bhappa Doi Brûlée offer a delightful conclusion to the meal, blending traditional Indian sweets with modern flair.

Chef Mathur’s presentation style, serving dishes on individual plates rather than in traditional family-style bowls, invites diners to appreciate the culinary artistry.  As one visitor aptly remarked, “You’re going to want to take your time because the taste combinations deserve your attention.”

A Dynamic Partnership

Joining Chef Mathur in this culinary venture is Chef Chandramohan Krishnasamy (Chandru). With a 30-year career in the restaurant industry that began in his home state of Tamil Nadu, Chandru brings a wealth of experience and a unique mastery of flavors to the Kutir kitchen. Having worked alongside Mathur since 2011, they have developed a successful catering business in Yonkers and opened several Indian restaurants together across the East Coast.

As the executive chef during evening service at Kutir, Chandru collaborates closely with Mathur to create a menu that reflects their shared vision and dedication to exceptional dining. “With our carefully crafted menu items and an intimate experience with our creations, we aim to leave our guests with a lasting impression that inspires them to return,” Chandru explains.

Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere

Kutir is designed to be more than just a dining destination; it is a welcoming space where guests can relax and savor their meals.  The ambiance is enhanced by bamboo chandelier shades and natural fiber art on the walls, creating an intimate setting that encourages diners to linger over their meals.  A few guests at the recent Grand Opening noted, “They get a 10 on atmosphere!”

A Vision for the Community

The vision for Kutir extends beyond the plate; it reflects the journeys of its founders.  Co-owner Ashu Wheeler, with over three decades of experience in the hospitality industry, shares his partners’ dedication to authenticity and innovation.  His story, beginning at age 17 with his own street food stand in Goa, India, and spanning various industry roles in the U.S., underscores his commitment to creating a restaurant that serves humble yet exceptional Indian cuisine.

Wheeler aims to challenge the common misconceptions about Indian cuisine, emphasizing its regional diversity and health benefits.  “People often think Indian food is just spicy,” he explains. “I want to show them that it’s so much more than that, with sophisticated flavors that cater to all palates.”  This commitment to presenting a broad spectrum of Indian culinary traditions adds another layer to Mamaroneck’s already vibrant food scene.  Ashu, as he prefers to be known by his guests, greets diners with a warmth and openness that makes them instantly feel welcome. “I work from my heart because I genuinely love customer service and food,” he shares.

The restaurant invites local diners to join in this culinary journey, promising a rich tapestry of flavors and the artistry of fine Indian cuisine.

Kutir: 441 Mamaroneck Avenue; (914) 315-1972. Open Monday to Sunday: 4:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.; Lunch service begins December 1: 11:30 a.m.– 2:30 p.m.  Takeout begins December 1.  The restaurant will not be accepting reservations until January, but guests are welcome to enjoy the bar area if there is a wait.
